How To Make Tomato Egg Noodles - By Vivian Li

Hello friends and happy summer!

While we wait for these summertime clouds to blow over we’ve been keeping busy with the buildout of our new space (we’ll be dropping some progress photos in the next newsletter – keep your eyes peeled!). We’ve also hosted a brilliant cadre of writers, artists, and musicians in our space recently, and we’ve got more to come soon. We’d love to see your dear hearts soon, please come through!

For this month’s mail art club, comics artist, illustrator, basketball pro, and expert chef Vivian Li has created an autobiographical comic recipe that explores her family history. She illustrates her grandfather’s first tomato encounter and her dad’s (in)famous peanut butter noodles. She then melds these memories into a pictorial guide to making tomato egg noodles (no peanut butter needed, don’t worry). We sat down with Vivian to ask her some hard-hitting questions about food:

How would you describe your relationship to food and memory?

Vivian Li: Hmm, I feel like I'm not really a big fancy food or food-driven person, but I do relate food a lot to memory and place. So much of my growing up is my family making food for me. We never ate out. When I left home, I really didn't feel like myself anymore because I didn't know how to prepare all of these Chinese ingredients or flavors I missed. I've been working on cookbooks with my mom to gain that knowledge she got from my grandma, so I can feel more at home far away.

If you had to combine two of your favorite foods into a single dish, what would they be?

Vivian Li: My favorite food is ice cream. My second favorite food is crackers and brie and jam. So maybe a new ice cream flavor with cracker bits and cheese, with swirls of jam. Maybe it should be gelato.

For the rest of your life, you only had the option to eat waffles, pancakes, or French toast, which would you choose?

Vivian Li: French toast.  French toast is yummy without needing syrup. Waffles need syrup.

Vivian is a comics artist, illustrator, basketball pro, and expert chef currently living in Seattle. She can be found wearing the color yellow, often in or near the water (very like a duck), equipped with watercolors and a camera (not like a duck).

Vivian tells funny, charming, and kind stories about occurrences both everyday and fantastic. Vivian likes fruits and hates carrots. If you see Vivian, ask her to dunk! She can do it! If she says no she is lying. See more at https://www.vivianlikesfruit.com/

Vivian Li is a founding member of the (new!!) writers group and is helping Common AREA create new educational offerings for our second space. She recently wowed us with a death-defying rendition of “The Time of my Life” during karaoke night. We hope for everyone’s sake that there are encores in the near future.
