A historic 30,000-square-foot building next to our 2nd Ave location is under active threat of demolition. After months of advocacy, we have secured a purchase and sale agreement with the current owners, Sound Health, who are supporting the transfer of the property to Common AREA for community use.

The City of Seattle has agreed to remove the regulatory agreements and forgive the 2.2-million-dollar loan tied to the building, clearing the path for preservation instead of demolition.

The vision for The El Rey includes affordable housing, artist residencies, nonprofit offices, studios, galleries, and public performance spaces — all under one roof in the heart of Belltown. We have assembled a coalition of partners including housing specialists, original architects, preservationists, and cultural organizations to bring this project to life.

Environmental and survey work are complete, and mechanical teams are identifying a more affordable path forward for essential repairs.
